Abstract :
For the large saddle magnet of MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) experimental generator no. 1 at the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Academia Sinica, the calculated normal heat generation per unit cooled perimeter (G) is 0.91 W/cm2 for the nominal operation condition. So it is necessary to test the stability behavior of the conductor under such high G-values and simulated cooling conditions. The test was performed in a 30-cm bore, 5-T background superconducting solenoid. The dynamic and static recovery currents were measured under 0-, 4- and 5-T, background fields and various heater energies. The experimental results were compared with calculation based on existing stability theories. The test results presented show that the design is acceptable.
