    The purpose of this paper is to encourage a wider recognition by engineers of a body of principles which in its mathematical form is a powerful instrument for the solution of practical problems. Some subjects in which the theory of probability has been used are recalled, the fundamental principles are stated and applied to three problems chosen from the field of telephone engineering.
