Abstract :
Environmentally oriented manufacturing practices are examined. The efforts of the electronics industry in Europe, Japan, and the US to establish an exemplary leadership position in environmental protection compliance and progress are described. Design-for-environment (DFE) programs, which call for the careful inclusion of environmentally safe attributes in the early design stages of new products, as opposed to re-engineering them late in the product cycle, are discussed. The role of the engineer is considered.<>
