  • Abstract
The independent grain model previously employed in analyzing the effect of stress on remanence ratios with stress parallel to the magnetic field has been extended to include the case of stress perpendicular to the field. In addition, the results have been averaged to obtain more realistic approximations to the stress sensitivities as functions of the magnetic anisotropy constant K1and magnetostriction constant λ100and λ111. From theory, it is concluded that for K_{1} < 0 , the parallel stress sensitivity is eliminated when \\lambda _{100} = -0.41 \\lambda _{111} . For the perpendicular case, \\lambda _{100} = -1.15 \\lambda _{111} with \\lambda _{111}< 0 and \\lambda _{100} = -0.38 \\lambda _{111} with \\lambda _{111} > 0 . For K_{1} > 0 , both stress sensitivities may be removed when \\lambda _{111} = 0 . The results of experiments with both single crystal and polycrystalline Y3MnxFe5-xO12compositions show qualitative agreement with theory, but also indicate that other mechanisms probably influence changes in remanence ratio.
