Abstract :
Several expressions of mode-field diameter are currently in use in the optical fiber industry enabling measurements to be made in different measurement domains. A re-formulation of the expression for mode-field diameter in the variable aperture domain is presented. An inconsistency has been observed between this expression and that currently specified by standards organisations and manufacturers. The magnitude of this discrepancy is investigated and a new expression is proposed.<>
