Abstract :
A cheap and mechanically simple bottom-finding device uses a single trip weight and a mercury switch to change the dc resistance of an electromechanical cable when the trip weight hits the sea bottom. The change is detected in a deck unit which sounds a loud alarm on an exterior speaker near the winch operator. The deck unit also displays the cable dc voltage and current.
