Abstract :
This paper reviews the development of the first fiber transmission systems used for telecommunications, examining briefly the components used, their interactions, and the way in which this has dictated the type of system to emerge. The problems of graded-index systems operating in the 850-900 nm waveband are discussed and the characteristics of the first graded-index 1300 nm wavelength systems are presented.
