Abstract
The recent fabrication of rare earth-doped fluoro-zirconate (ZBLAN) glass fiber has spurred the development of a family of visible and ultraviolet fiber lasers pumped by upconversion. The performance of CW room temperature devices demonstrated to date is reviewed with emphasis on the recently reported Nd-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating in the ultraviolet at 381 nm
