Abstract :
Fourteen gauge-years of 10 s rain rate data are analysed to yield a simple empirical model of the average, annual, 10 s, rain duration statistics in the southern UK. Two variants of the RAL rapid response rain gauge are used, in two locations in Hampshire. A range of existing and proposed models are compared to the measured data. A model based on a power law - negative exponential distribution is found to be a good fit to measured data and to have some theoretical foundation. The model is validated against two gauge-years of data not used to derive the model parameters.
