Techniques for Increasing the Picture Quality of NTSC Transmissions in Direct Satellite Broadcasting

This paper discusses the NTSC color television system and the possible increases in picture quality achievable from new technology infusions over the next decade. Techniques for improved NTSC are described, as are the new extended-definition (EDTV) and high-definition (HDTV) alternatives that have been proposed for new direct broadcasting satellite services. Comparisons of the features of each are included. A tutorial review of certain aspects of the NTSC system is given to help the reader better understand the subtleties of the methods of increasing picture quality.
