Abstract :
The effects of perpendicular orientation and coercivity on short wavelength recording characteristics for Ba-ferrite flexible disks (FDs) were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the short wavelength output is roughly proportional to S⊥√Hc⊥, as long as the recording head is not saturated. The results show that the Ba-ferrite FD of Hc⊥=1400 Oe, S⊥=0.75, and Ms=120 emu/cc provides larger output than the metal FD of Hc=1560 Oe and Ms=200 emu/cc, at over 300 kFRPI. A novel simple recording method, which uses the FTE (ferrite trailing edge) head, was developed. With this method, the oriented Ba-ferrite FD provides slimmer and more symmetrical longitudinal-recording-like waveforms than the metal FD, without trading off the superior short wavelength output. The essential mechanism regarding how the FTE head works is assumed to be due to a time-lagged canceling effect for the perpendicular component of the remanent magnetization
