Abstract
Over the past 20 years, commercial communications satellite systems have developed into effective and reliable global, regional, maritime, and domestic communications services. These systems provide telephone, telegraph, television, data, and facsimile transmission and reception. This paper reviews the history and status of today´s commercial communications satellite systems and discusses the design and reliability considerations applicable to their key elements, satellites and ground stations.
