Abstract :
The magnetic properties and recording performance of laminated CoPtCr/Cr films were studied. The authors investigated the effects of Cr underlayer thickness, magnetic layer thickness, and Cr interlayer thickness, and compared the results of laminated films to those of unlaminated films. Media noise reduction was observed using laminated films. A 3-nm thick nonmagnetic Cr interlayer is sufficient to effectively reduce the media noise. The microstructure of these films was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy. The results confirm the proposed noise reduction mechanism
