Abstract :
A 3D finite-element analysis of an ASDEX Upgrade toroidal-field coil is carried out. In this structural analysis the object was to find out how closely a coil with the given geometry and the vault support conditions approaches the so-called bending-free state. The important normal-stress components within the coil parts are assessed along with the shear-stress along the coil winding due to bending moment in order to allow appropriate modification in design and manufacturing.
