Abstract
The design and measurement of a wideband patch antenna is described. The antenna combines two complimentary bandwidth enhancement techniques: aperture feeding and reactive loading. The use of this technique results in bandwidths in excess of 10% and measured radiation efficiency of 93% while the height of the antenna and feed structure is below 8 mm. This demonstrates the application of reactive loading to create large bandwidth patch antennas as an alternative to increasing substrate height. The mechanism of reactive loading of patch antennas is also investigated using transmission line analysis.
