Abstract :
Applications of a superconducting open gradient magnetic separator (OGMS) to fractional separation in air of weakly magnetic materials was presented. A simple way of calculating the magnetic field of a pair of coils in cusp mode was described. The agreement of the calculated trajectories using the approximation of four linear current carriers was established. The size-independence of trajectories of particles larger than a certain size was graphically shown. The effect of the particle release height on particle deflection was analyzed and the optimum height value was found. It was shown that scattering among falling particles in a thin curtain is only of limited importance for the separation process.
