Abstract
Linear motors deliver excellent performance in rapid positioning applications while practically eliminating the performance-reducing effects of friction, inertia, backlash and wear associated with rotary-to-linear drive mechanisms or maintenance intensive hydraulics. HTS with its properties of high current density at low electric losses is a synergetic fit. A linear motor of asynchronous type utilizing a poly solenoidal stack of HTS double pancake coils has been conceived, designed and built, with Trithor having developed and manufactured the HTS wire and coils. This paper reports on design, cryogenic integration and testing results with particular emphasis on the tube drawing application known as Limo draw. This is since Limo draw is presently the only motoric application where HTS is used in the stator.
