Abstract
Illumination of gases by X-rays results in decreasing populations of excited states for increasing X-ray dosage. This deexcitation effect decreases for increasing dc bias fields. These results indicate that X-rays can affect population inversion detrimentally. Implications concerning X-ray preionization in TEA lasers are discussed.
