Abstract
A technique has been developed for obtaining efficient modulation of an optical signal. It is shown that the presence of a small optical bias signal on an appropriately designed laser amplifier can lead to a substantial change in another much larger signal. The resulting modulators are in many respects the optical analogs of conventional electronic transistors, and several applications are considered.
