Abstract :
At first glance, it might seem that the editors have included too many topics in this book, but medical instrument design demands a knowledge of several fields. Tompkins and Webster cover most of them, opening with three chapters devoted to transduction of biological signals and to necessary background in signal processing. Included are the frequency range of various biological signals, electrodes, amplifiers, and transducers; analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion techniques; and signal-processing hardware and software techniques. This introduction, however, assumes considerable prior background. It would have benefited from more detail in the fundamentals and more claarity in the mathematics.
