Abstract :
Natural balancing of the cell voltages is observed in many multilevel converters, however, this was not previously described for the modular multilevel converter (MMC). This paper introduces a method whereby the self-balancing behavior of the MMC can be described and analyzed. A novel equivalent circuit of the two cell single phase MMC is introduced whereby the unbalance in the system is clearly stated. Using this equivalent circuit a method, using the frequency domain as basis for analysis, is proposed whereby the self-balancing properties of the converter can be described. The method is verified through comparison with simulation results.
