Abstract :
The application requirement on lasers can be expressed by a figure of merit. Born and Wolf separated the brightness and a time-bandwidth product of a light source. We examine some pulse laser applications and demonstrate that the ratio of the brightness and the spectral width defined as the spectral brightness can be used as a figure of merit for a laser source in most applications.
