Abstract :
The possibility of ballistic transport in semiconductors is discussed and criteria are given for the experimental verification of ballistic behavior. The potential of purely ballistic motion, velocity overshoot, and inhomogeneities of the free carrier concentration in the space charge limited regime for device performance is assessed.
