Abstract :
We demonstrate that the electrostatic stress in model structures representative for water trees can never reach the yield stress of polyethylene. We propose a model in which space charge flow across water-polymer interfaces causes electrochemical reactions such as partial oxydation. The morphology of the water tree is determined by microphase phase separation of the partially oxydized material.
