Abstract
Electronics is important to every country-a `sunrise´ industry, with great potential for growth. In a developing country such as India, however, it is doubly important, as it contributes at once to both national wealth and modernity. Here, the author describes how, after decades of striving for modernisation locked away from the developed world, India has changed direction. Now it threatens to emerge into the world electronics market, bringing the weight of its resources to bear as a new industrial giant
