Abstract :
The author examines the controversy over the effects of human exposure to electromagnetic fields, particularly the magnetic field at power line-frequencies (60 Hz in North America, 50 Hz in Europe and some other places). She discusses typical exposures and describes some epidemiological studies and laboratory experiments. It is pointed out that, overall, the existing evidence is not convincing that the fields are harmful to people. The mechanism by which fields interact with animals, including humans, is explained. Medical applications of fields are described, and the contribution that engineers can make to research on both applications and harmful effects of fields is noted.<>
