Abstract :
Following the pattern of growth of electronics in the South and Southwest, the 1953 Southwestern IRE Conference was bigger and better than ever. Registration exceeded 1100 and two parallel sessions of technical papers and over 100 exhibits provided an interesting and busy time for all those who attended. The session on Audio was held on Saturday morning, February 7, under the chairmanship of Dr. Richard E. Lane of the University of Texas. Approximately 225 members attended this session. Four papers were presented: (1) "Electron Beam Reproducing Head for Magnetic Tape Recording" by A.M. Skellett and Lawrence E. Loveridge of National Union Radio Corp., and Mr. J. Warren Gratian of Stromberg-Carlson Co.; (2) "Status of Hilitary Research and Development in Acoustics and Audio" by Paul Weber of the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, Washington, DC, USA; (3) "Acoustical DGmping of Loud Speakers" by B.B. Bauer of Shure Brothers, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA; and (4) "The Fluid Sound Phonograph Pick-up" by Bruce D. Eytinge of the Institute of Inventive Research, San Antonio, TX, USA. Brief abstracts are provided for all four presentations.
