Abstract
A new class of universal computers, cellular array machines, is introduced. The development of reprogrammable logic leading up to the development of field programmable gate arrays is reviewed. An architecture for constructing modular and scalable general-purpose computers from reprogrammable logic is presented. It is shown that such a machine can be programmed by translating Occam into asynchronous digital logic circuits. Examples are given of circuit components which implement Occam operators
