Abstract
The mean magnetic induction B of a permalloy specimen was determined by measuring the Larmor precession angle of a polarized neutron beam. The measurements were performed in a temperature range from Tc=-60 K to +20 K at magnetic fields up to 1150 A/cm. The temperature behavior of B with the specimen close to magnetic saturation could be fitted well by a model of a ferromagnet consisting of mutually independent grains with different phase transition temperatures. Small field-dependent depolarization was measured within a few Kelvins around Tc and is attributed to an inhomogeneous magnetization distribution caused by the spread in phase-transition temperatures.
