Abstract
The authors present a restoration algorithm designed for a ring-based multimedia ATM architecture, which is characterized by the simplicity of the node structure allowing flexible network configurations and an efficient bandwidth management. They show how easily reliable connections can be implemented within such an architecture. Basically, restoration is implemented by rerouting the protected traffic away from the failed component. The node which is located before the failed component is in charge of performing the rerouting. It requires only a few control flags of the routing table to be modified. This guarantees a fast restoration. The algorithm also allows an efficient use of the spare capacity
