Abstract
The introduction of a deeply etched groove between interacting optical channels for the purpose of inhibiting the interaction is examined. Viewed as an alternative to waveguide bends and S-bends this approach has the advantage of compactness. Calculations on a directional coupler point to the possibility of highly power-efficient operation associated especially with thin grooves. The method of lines is used.
