Abstract :
An analytical approach to the design of microwave oscillators with output power prediction is presented. The design method is mainly concerned with the calculation of the output embedding network (network external to the active device) using small-signal active device two-port parameters as the starting point. The oscillator output power is estimated with the help of the static DC bias voltage and current. Three oscillators at frequency 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 GHz are designed and implemented for verification purposes. Experimental results of less than 1% deviation in frequency prediction and 1 dB of output power deviation are found. Also found experimentally is that the oscillators designed by using this approach have extremely low phase noise and low frequency drift.
