Abstract
The influence of an equal step-size quantizer on the sum of signal and noise is determined for general one-dimensional noise density functions. The efficiency and the nonlinearity of the quantized signal are studied in detail. It is shown that in many cases of practical importance even a very crude quantization yields sufficiently linear and surprisingly efficient signal estimates.
