Abstract :
Swiss Telecom PTT has launched an optimized communication service for applications with small data volumes. The service, which is overlaid on their existing packet-switched data network, is based entirely on international ISO and ITU-TS standards. This article describes the communication solution, the protocols, and some service aspects with regard to cost savings and international standards, and discusses present applications and possible future developments.<>
