Abstract :
Highlights one company´s experiences in the use of off-the-shelf microcomputer-based equation-solving and spreadsheet packages, as well as customised programs written in FORTRAN and BASIC in order to assist the mechanical design and analysis of its products. Brown Brothers & Co. Ltd., based in Edinburgh, is involved in the design and manufacture of medium to heavy engineering mechanical systems for marine and offshore applications. These include ship stabilisation and steering-gear equipment, as well as motion compensators for use in offshore, oil-production platforms and vessels
