Abstract :
It is shown that ultrasonic agitation of insulating oil in service (i.e. contaminated oil), as proposed prior to electrical-breakdown tests, does not affect its chemical structure. On the contrary, it homogenises particles within the sample giving it a more realistic breakdown-strength value far more representative of actual values under service conditions.
