This paper defines, and places in context, the concepts of natural frequency, critical speed, excitation mechanical resonance, damping, torsional excitation, torsional critical speeds, unbalanced magnetic pull, and magnetic instability. This is a qualitative review of these concepts as interpreted by an electrical motor design engineer
