Abstract :
Addresses software and its development methods and tools, pointing out the special factors that appear to make software different. The paper starts with a discussion of the problems and the solution of treating software development as an engineering activity. Much software development is office work, and general computer aids for the support of office work are described. This leads into a discussion of the typical activities involved in the development of software, and the lifecycle. Then, for each typical activity, the methods and tools are outlined, leading to a discussion of the need to integrate tools and the possible future developments of software engineering and its tool support
