Abstract :
It has been claimed that 70% of UK manufacturing companies have no plans to do anything about integrating their computer-based systems across all applications within the next five years. I refer to the emerging International Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP ISO 10303), which has evolved from earlier standards concerned solely with the exchange of geometrical data associated with drawings, and which will embrace all classes of engineering information. Its eventual acceptance internationally, in some form, is inevitable, for the simple reason that until some such standard exists, computers can never achieve their full potential as engineering information management tools.<>
