Abstract :
This paper presents the generation mechanism and characteristics of modal noise in vibrating aerial optical cables. It has been determined that splice imperfection determines modal-noise amplitude, and modal-noise frequency becomes higher with increasing cable-vibration stroke and/or splice loss. It was also determined that this characteristic is explained by a change in the fiber elongation.
