Abstract :
The effect of HIP (hot isostatic pressing) treatments on the critical current densities of Mo-sheathed PbMo6S8 wires was investigated. Remarkable Jc enhancement was observed for the wires HIP treated at 1200°C: Jc >3×108 A/m2 (8 T) has been frequently observed, and the best values were Jc=2.2×108 A/m2 (18 T) and 9.3×107 A/m2 (23 T). Large J c(||)/Jc(⊥) ratios, greater than 3, were observed for the wires with high Jc, which demonstrates that the observed Jc enhancement is due to the improved interconnectivity between the PbMo6S8 grains. The prospect of using the HIP-treated Mo-sheath PbMo6S8 wires as a superconducting wire for extremely high-field magnets is discussed
