Abstract :
A 60 T nondestructive pulsed magnet for the “Free Electron Laser for Infrared Experiments” (FELIX) is developed. As a rise time of 10 μs is required, the magnet is designed consisting of two coils in order to cope with the skin effect and power requirements. Each of the coils is energized by its own capacitor bank. The inner coil is composed of 2 helices made from copper tubes; it is energized by a 12 kV, 0.1 mF capacitor bank to generate 30 T with 20 μs pulse duration. The 60 T field is obtained by adding a 30 T field from the outer coil with 5 ms pulse duration energized by a 5 kV, 8 mF capacitor bank. The basic design criteria, the coil modeling and manufacturing techniques are discussed
