Abstract :
An overview is provided of LADWP´s (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) distribution system, past jointing techniques, the investigation and evaluation of alternative approaches, and the field experience with the joint selected for use. The satisfying of the required test sequences of IEEE 404-1986 and the positive results of further testing showed that the heat-shrinkable joint method provides an acceptable means of splicing 35 kV class CLP (cross-linked polyethylene) power distribution cables. A comparison of installed cost, time, and required joint spacing shows that the heat-shrinkable joint is the best splice for LADWP´s large conductor 35 kV cross-linked polyethylene splicing
