  • Abstract
A method for estimating the chirp of the output light field of a directly modulated laser diode is presented and experimentally tested. This method is based upon simple measurements of the modulated output power and spectral lineshape. Using a method of best fit to the spectral lineshape, a good estimation of the field phase is easily evaluated. This information can then be used to determine the suitability of laser diodes in high-speed, high-dispersion intensity modulated direct detected optical systems
