Abstract :
A superconducting magnet has been developed with a self-shield for whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that features magnetic field strengths of 0.5 T, 1.0 T, and 1.5 T and has the following characteristics: (1) a low-leakage magnetic field due to the directly mounted magnetic shield (very small in the 0.5-mT range); (2) reduced helium consumption due to the use of a high adiabatic cryostat and refrigerator (does not need liquid nitrogen); (3) a horizontal service port that reduces overhead clearance requirements; (4) superior mechanical strength (can even be transported in the cooled state); and (5) an emergency run down unit
