Abstract :
The conceptual design of an engineering test model (ETM) of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system that will demonstrate the efficacy of large scale production systems is described. Large-scale SMES systems are likely to store 1000 to 10000 MWh of electricity in a solenoid winding 300 to 1500 m in diameter. The conceptual design of the ETM coil pack is presented. The design approach taken to reduce technical risk has been to aim at simplicity, to avoid unproven manufacturing methods, to apply conservative safety factors when establishing design allowables, and to develop and test to prove efficacy
