Abstract
Many academic papers have suggested the use of multivariable optimal control to improve generator stability but implementations only appear to have been made in the laboratory with model machines. After a brief discussion of the principles of control and estimation results are shown for a successful laboratory implementation. The further possibilities for improving control are outlined and the problems of application to multi-machine systems are discussed. Emphasis is given to the logic of the approach rather than mathematical detail which is given elsewhere.
