Abstract
We show that the gain-energy acceptance product of the uniform wiggler FEL is a maximum with respect to variations in phase shift or dispersion along the length, and any additional phase shift or dispersion cannot increase this product. For example, in the case of an optical klystron, the gain is increased by introducing a dispersive section, but the gain-energy acceptance product falls to less than that of the uniform wiggler FEL.
