  • Abstract
    An in vitro tissue model for specific application to noninvasive transmittance pulse oximetry is discussed. The model was used to assess the effect of variations in carboxyhemoglobin concentration on noninvasive measurements of arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation. The model is also potentially useful for assessing the effect on the accuracy of noninvasive pulse oximeters of other physiological and physical variables, such as blood hemocrit, methemoglobin concentration, arterial blood pulsations, blood temperature, and variations in the peak emission wavelengths of the LEDs in the optical sensor.
