Abstract :
Two types of heterodyne quadrature ASK receiver are analysed using the classical rigorous covariance matrix diagonalisation technique. The type 1 receiver features a homodyne system sensitivity (requiring in the best case 34.7 received photons (peak power) for a 10-9 error probability). This is ~3 dB better than the best sensitivity of the type 2 receiver
